Mississippi State Stays Perfect; Oregon and LSU Deliver Ranked Wins
Saturday's loaded college football slate didn't slow down when the sun went down.
After Florida dominated Ole Miss and Iowa stunned Michigan during the afternoon window, three ranked matchups highlighted primetime. Mississippi State delivered the night's most dramatic result, Oregon went into Los Angeles and took down USC, and LSU overwhelmed Texas A&M in Death Valley.
By the end of the night, another group of contenders had made their statements.
Mississippi State Stays Perfect
No. 24 Mississippi State entered Saturday undefeated.
The Bulldogs left it that way.
Mississippi State rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat No. 19 Missouri 31-24, improving to 4-0 and earning its first victory over a ranked opponent since 2014.
Quarterback Kamario Taylor delivered another huge performance, completing 27 of 38 passes for 360 yards and three touchdowns.
But the Bulldogs had to respond after watching an early advantage disappear.
Mississippi State jumped ahead 14-0 before Missouri battled back. Tigers quarterback Austin Simmons threw two third-quarter touchdown passes to Cayden Lee, helping Missouri take a 24-17 lead.
The fourth quarter belonged to Mississippi State.
A 14-play, 73-yard drive ended with Fluff Bothwell scoring from four yards out to tie the game at 24. After the Bulldogs' defense forced a three-and-out, Taylor and the offense went back to work.
Anthony Evans III's 44-yard reception helped move Mississippi State deep into Missouri territory. Taylor then found Sanfrisco Magee for a 24-yard touchdown with 3:57 remaining.
Missouri had opportunities to answer, but Mississippi State's defense held.
The Bulldogs finished with 499 total yards, including 360 through the air. Bothwell added 122 rushing yards and a touchdown while also catching six passes for 55 yards and another score. Evans finished with 114 receiving yards.
Mississippi State didn't just protect its undefeated record.
The Bulldogs showed they could respond when a ranked opponent took control of the game.
Oregon Goes Into Los Angeles and Delivers
No. 20 Oregon entered its matchup against No. 12 USC needing a significant win.
The Ducks got one.
Oregon defeated USC 41-27 in Los Angeles, extending its winning streak against the Trojans to five games.
But Oregon's victory came with a major midgame challenge.
Starting quarterback Dante Moore was taken to a local hospital after suffering an injury in the first half. That forced Dylan Raiola into the game with Oregon's season facing an important test.
Raiola answered it.
The Nebraska transfer completed 19 of 25 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns, helping Oregon maintain control despite losing its starting quarterback.
Dierre Hill Jr. contributed both as a receiver and runner, finishing with more than 100 receiving yards while adding 63 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Jamari Johnson also surpassed 100 receiving yards.
Oregon eventually put the game away with a late Jordon Davison touchdown and a Koi Perich interception.
For a Ducks team that entered Saturday already carrying a loss, beating a top-15 USC team on the road was an important response.
Now the attention also turns toward Moore and his status moving forward.
LSU Dominates Texas A&M
There wasn't nearly as much drama in Baton Rouge.
No. 10 LSU controlled No. 23 Texas A&M in a 35-6 victory, holding the Aggies without a touchdown.
Quarterback Sam Leavitt completed 17 of 23 passes for 312 yards and two touchdowns before leaving the game with an injury. LSU already held a commanding advantage when backup Landen Clark entered during the second half.
Clark didn't complete a pass, but he didn't need to.
The backup quarterback rushed for 41 yards and two touchdowns as LSU continued adding to its lead.
The Tigers' defense did the rest.
Texas A&M managed only two field goals as LSU received solo tackles from 16 different defenders and never allowed the Aggies to seriously threaten the outcome.
After LSU's earlier loss to Ole Miss, Saturday represented an opportunity to respond against another ranked SEC opponent.
The Tigers answered emphatically.
Primetime Delivered Its Own Statements
Saturday began with six matchups featuring two AP-ranked teams, the most on a single day since December 2023.
The afternoon produced Florida's dominant victory over Ole Miss and Iowa's last-second win at Michigan.
Primetime provided a different collection of stories.
Mississippi State remained undefeated and finally broke through against a ranked opponent.
Oregon overcame the loss of its starting quarterback and won on the road against USC.
LSU made sure Texas A&M never had an opportunity to turn their matchup into a competitive game.
From Gainesville and Ann Arbor to Starkville, Los Angeles and Baton Rouge, Saturday delivered exactly what a loaded college football schedule promised.
Statements, surprises and results that will reshape the conversation heading into Week 5.
