Florida Crushes No. 4 Ole Miss; Iowa Stuns Michigan at the Buzzer
Saturday afternoon delivered two very different statements in college football.
In Gainesville, No. 21 Florida didn't need any late-game drama. The Gators overwhelmed No. 4 Ole Miss 52-28, using a dominant rushing attack and a relentless second half to hand the Rebels their first loss of the season.
Meanwhile, more than 1,000 miles away in Ann Arbor, No. 17 Iowa needed almost every second available.
The Hawkeyes scored with two seconds remaining to stun No. 18 Michigan 20-19 inside the Big House, completing one of the wildest finishes of the college football weekend.
Florida Runs Over Ole Miss
Florida entered Saturday with an opportunity to prove its undefeated start was more than an early-season story.
Consider that message delivered.
The Gators rushed for 291 yards and six touchdowns while controlling the game against an Ole Miss team that entered Gainesville unbeaten and ranked fourth nationally.
Jadan Baugh led the charge with 142 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Duke Clark provided another explosive option, finishing with 126 yards and a touchdown while averaging 10.5 yards per carry.
Florida led 17-6 at halftime, but Ole Miss quickly made things interesting after the break. The Rebels pulled within 17-14 early in the third quarter.
Florida's response ended any thoughts of a comeback.
The Gators scored touchdowns on five consecutive second-half possessions, turning what briefly became a three-point game into a rout.
Quarterback Aaron Philo complemented the rushing attack by completing 16 of 23 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown without throwing an interception.
Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss threw for 298 yards and a touchdown while adding two scores on the ground, but the Rebels couldn't match Florida's offensive pace. Two Ole Miss turnovers also helped the Gators maintain control.
Florida finished with 497 total yards and improved to 4-0.
After Ole Miss's emotional victory over LSU last week, the Rebels arrived in Gainesville carrying considerable momentum. Florida took it away emphatically.
This wasn't a last-second upset.
It was a statement.
Iowa Saves Its Best for Last
Michigan appeared to have survived.
With only seconds remaining, the Wolverines held a 19-14 advantage and Iowa was running out of opportunities.
The Hawkeyes had one left.
Quarterback Hank Brown drove Iowa down the field in the closing minute, including a 29-yard completion to Addison Ostrenga that moved the Hawkeyes to the Michigan 16-yard line with 11 seconds remaining.
Then came the decisive play.
With two seconds left, Brown connected with Reece Vander Zee for a 16-yard touchdown, giving Iowa a stunning 20-19 victory.
There would be no Michigan response.
Vander Zee finished with five catches for 67 yards and caught both of Brown's touchdown passes. Brown completed 21 of 35 attempts for 227 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood produced the bigger statistical performance, throwing for 276 yards and two touchdowns. JJ Buchanan was his biggest weapon, catching five passes for 130 yards and both scores.
Michigan also outgained Iowa 429-285.
None of it mattered after the final drive.
Iowa entered the fourth quarter trailing 13-7 before scoring 13 points in the final period. Michigan appeared to regain control when Underwood connected with Buchanan for a 49-yard touchdown that made it 19-14 with 12:11 remaining.
The Hawkeyes refused to go away.
Their reward was a 4-0 record and a ranked road victory delivered with two seconds remaining.
Two Statements, Two Different Ways
Florida and Iowa didn't win the same way Saturday.
Florida imposed itself.
Iowa survived until it could strike.
The Gators took one of the highest-ranked teams in the country and turned a competitive SEC game into a 24-point victory. The Hawkeyes went into one of college football's most recognizable venues and stole a victory on their final offensive snap.
By the end of the afternoon, both had added significant wins to undefeated starts.
And with several ranked matchups still remaining Saturday night, college football's loaded weekend was far from finished.
