Week 6 Takeaways: Georgia Is College Football's Best, Kiffin Struggles, Oregon Falls and Week 7 Looms Large

College football has a way of changing the conversation in a single Saturday.

Week 6 delivered another reminder.

Georgia went into Tuscaloosa and emerged as the nation's top-ranked team. Lane Kiffin watched LSU suffer a damaging overtime loss at Kentucky. Dan Lanning and Oregon fell out of the AP Top 25. Meanwhile, Ohio State and Indiana are preparing to settle a major Big Ten question, while Notre Dame heads to Provo for its toughest test yet.

The rankings have changed. Expectations have shifted. And the next Saturday could be even more revealing.

Here are five major takeaways from Week 6.

1. Georgia Is the Best Team in College Football

There shouldn't be much debate about which team deserves the No. 1 ranking.

Georgia earned it.

The Bulldogs defeated Alabama 20-17 in Tuscaloosa, winning a game that demanded physicality, discipline and composure against one of college football's most talented programs.

Quarterback Gunner Stockton contributed through the air and on the ground, while Georgia's rushing attack helped the Bulldogs withstand Alabama's pressure.

It wasn't a flawless performance. But winning championships rarely requires perfection every Saturday.

It requires the ability to execute when the stakes are highest.

Georgia demonstrated that ability.

With Texas losing to Oklahoma, the Bulldogs moved into the top spot in Sunday's AP Poll, receiving 66 of 70 first-place votes.

The Bulldogs are 6-0, and their victory over Alabama gives them the strongest argument for being the nation's best team right now.

Notre Dame, Miami, Ohio State and Indiana all have opportunities to challenge that distinction.

But until somebody proves otherwise, Georgia has set the standard.

2. Lane Kiffin Is on the Struggle Bus

Lane Kiffin's first season at LSU is becoming more complicated.

The Tigers suffered a 35-34 overtime defeat at Kentucky, dropping from No. 10 to No. 22 in the AP Poll.

That's a significant fall for a program with championship expectations.

The concern isn't simply that LSU lost.

It's how the Tigers continue to find themselves in difficult situations against opponents they are expected to compete with or defeat.

Kentucky deserves credit for making the plays necessary to win. The Wildcats are now ranked No. 15, and their victory should not be dismissed as LSU merely beating itself.

But Kiffin was brought to Baton Rouge to elevate the program.

That means producing results against quality SEC competition, managing difficult road environments and building a team capable of handling adversity.

LSU still has the talent to recover.

However, with No. 16 Mississippi State coming to Baton Rouge next Saturday, Kiffin doesn't have much time to find answers.

The SEC won't wait for LSU to get comfortable.

And neither will the expectations surrounding Kiffin.

3. Dan Lanning and Oregon Have Fallen

What has happened to Oregon?

The Ducks entered the season with championship ambitions and a roster expected to compete near the top of the Big Ten.

Now they're outside the AP Top 25.

Saturday's 17-15 home loss to UCLA was another damaging result for Dan Lanning's program.

Oregon committed seven turnovers, an astonishing number for a team with such high expectations.

The Ducks had opportunities to win, but mistakes repeatedly undermined their efforts.

Quarterback Dylan Raiola struggled, and questions surrounding Oregon's offensive decision-making and execution have only intensified.

Meanwhile, UCLA remained undefeated and climbed to No. 12.

For Lanning, this is a defining stretch.

Oregon has established itself as a national contender under his leadership, making consecutive 10-win seasons an expectation rather than an accomplishment.

But reputation doesn't win games.

The Ducks are now 4-2, and their path back into the national conversation requires more than simply avoiding another defeat.

Oregon must rediscover its identity.

Because right now, the Ducks look nothing like the championship contender many expected.

4. Ohio State vs. Indiana: Who Is the Best Team in the Big Ten?

Next Saturday, the Big Ten takes center stage.

No. 4 Ohio State travels to Bloomington to face No. 5 Indiana in a matchup that could determine the conference's early frontrunner.

Ohio State enters following a commanding 45-16 victory over Maryland.

Quarterback Julian Sayin threw four first-half touchdowns, and Jeremiah Smith continued demonstrating why he's among college football's most dangerous offensive weapons.

Indiana's path was considerably more difficult.

The Hoosiers survived Nebraska 20-17, showing the resilience necessary to win when everything isn't going according to plan.

Now comes a much greater challenge.

Ohio State has the explosive offense, championship experience and talent to overwhelm opponents.

Indiana has the confidence and momentum of an undefeated team that continues finding ways to win.

The Buckeyes are looking to reinforce their position among the nation's elite.

The Hoosiers are trying to prove their rise is sustainable.

And unlike the debates surrounding early-season rankings, this question gets answered on the field.

Who is the best team in the Big Ten?

Saturday will give us a much clearer picture.

5. Notre Dame Faces Its First Real Test in Provo

Notre Dame has looked impressive.

But how much have we really learned about the Fighting Irish?

Saturday's 58-7 victory over Stanford was another dominant performance, keeping Notre Dame undefeated and moving the Irish to No. 2 in the AP Poll.

Now the competition gets considerably tougher.

Notre Dame travels to Provo to face No. 8 BYU in one of Week 7's biggest matchups.

BYU is undefeated, and playing at LaVell Edwards Stadium presents a challenge Notre Dame hasn't experienced to this degree this season.

The atmosphere will be intense.

ESPN's College GameDay is heading to Provo, adding another layer of national attention to the matchup.

Notre Dame has the talent and results to justify its No. 2 ranking.

But rankings are only part of the equation.

Winning a high-profile road game against a top-10 opponent would provide the Fighting Irish with the kind of signature victory that strengthens a championship résumé.

BYU, meanwhile, has an opportunity to announce itself as a genuine national contender.

This is more than a nonconference matchup.

It's an examination of whether Notre Dame is as good as its ranking suggests.

The Playmaker's Final Take

Week 6 reminded everyone that college football doesn't operate according to preseason expectations.

Georgia has earned the right to call itself the nation's best team.

Lane Kiffin faces growing pressure to deliver at LSU.

Oregon's championship ambitions are suddenly in jeopardy.

And two major Week 7 matchups could dramatically reshape the national conversation.

Ohio State and Indiana will battle for Big Ten supremacy.

Notre Dame and BYU will test each other's championship credentials in Provo.

The first six weeks have provided plenty of surprises.

But the biggest questions are far from settled.

Georgia is the standard today. The rest of college football has another Saturday to prove it belongs in the conversation.
